Health Care Ethics

How should we define "death"? Who should decide when to withdraw life-sustaining treatment? How should we allocate donated organs? At Saint Louis University’s Department of Health Care Ethics, these aren’t just abstract questions. They form the foundation of our research and practice.

We examine these topics from a theoretical perspective, as well as a practical one. We study cases from all areas of health care: nursing, medicine, public health and clinical research. And we serve faith-based health care institutions through consultations and educational programs, helping them to better treat patients.

As part of an effort to fulfill our mission as a premier Jesuit institution, the Department of Health Care Ethics is dedicated to excellence in both secular and religious discourse.

Giving

The Saint Louis University Department of Health Care Ethics welcomes gifts that would provide funding for the various needs that are not typically covered by its regular operating budget. Because your generosity allows us to offer valuable opportunities to students and faculty, and to nurture our intellectual community, they are crucial to the continued success of the department.

Funds can be used to support student scholarships and awards, faculty awards for exceptional teaching and scholarship, visits by renowned scholars, travel expenses for scholarly conferences, specific research projects or for the recruitment and retention of our students.

All funds of at least $10,000 (paid over a maximum four-year period) established for the benefit of the Center for Health Care Ethics can be named for the donor or for someone whose memory the benefactor wishes to honor.
