Faculty Senate

The Faculty Senate is the principal organ and voice of the faculty in matters of University-wide concern, and it is the primary means by which the faculty members of the University participate in governance of the University as a whole. [SLU Faculty Manual, Sec II.E.]

GREETINGS FROM THE FACULTY SENATE PRESIDENT

Welcome to the website of the Faculty Senate. The Senate is the representative body for all the faculty at Saint Louis University. Senators are elected by their academic unit (that is, college, school, library, or unaffiliated units) to serve as representatives. In this role, Senators represent the views of the faculty in their respective units. Senators also serve as University citizens, interacting with and listening to the views of senators across the University, and letting their faculty know about the business conducted at Senate meetings, including any decisions and resolutions passed by the Faculty Senate. While the Senate meets monthly, ongoing University activities and issues happen via the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and several additional standing Senate committees. This structure provides the faculty with multiple points of input on important University governance.

See links on this page for information regarding meeting time for the Faculty Senate, Senate standing committees (forthcoming), and my blog. We also have a suggestion box for questions the faculty would like to ask and have answered. Questions can be directed to the Faculty Senate and/or one of the standing committees.

The Senate鈥檚 primary functions are to oversee the provisions of the Saint Louis University Faculty Manual , to uphold the academic mission of the University and its Catholic Jesuit ideals, and to further the principles of shared governance in the functioning of the University. The Senate ensures that the principles of shared governance are adhered to by faculty and administrators alike. The Faculty Manual is our contract with the University; it describes all the rights, powers, privileges, and responsibilities of the faculty. I strongly urge you to review the Faculty Manual.

Please feel free to contact me at any time (christine.rollins@slu.edu) if you want to raise any concerns that you might have as either a senator or as a faculty member, no matter how small they might seem. All faculty concerns are the business of the Senate. While every issue might not be within the purview of the Faculty Senate, I will try to direct you to the correct person or office to obtain resolution. Know that the Faculty Senate is here to help in whatever manner that it can.
