Healthcare antitrust scholar Theodosia Stavroulaki and LGBTQ health equity expert Heather Walter-McCabe join the Center for Health Law Studies faculty in the fall.
Saint Louis University School of Law is pleased to announce the appointment of two full-time professors to the faculty for July 2024, enhancing the breadth and depth of the faculty expertise and scholarship in the nationally recognized Center for Health Law Studies.
鈥淚 could not be more pleased about the addition of these two health law scholars to our already strong faculty body,鈥 said Professor Kelly Gillespie, director of the Center for Health Law Studies. 鈥淧rofessors Theodosia Stavroulaki and Heather Walter-McCabe bring with them a commitment to mission-driven work, considerable expertise in their respective areas, and national prominence within the health law community. Both professors have demonstrated a commitment to health equity and health justice through scholarship and teaching that will benefit the Center for Health Law Studies and the entire SLU LAW community.鈥
Theodosia Stavroulaki
Courses for Fall 2024: Antitrust Law
Theodosia Stavroulaki joins the faculty as an assistant professor from Gonzaga University School of Law. She brings with her a depth of expertise in antitrust law, health law, and law and inequality. Prior to Gonzaga, Stavroulaki was the Jaharis Faculty Fellow at the DePaul College of Law, Grotius Research Scholar at Michigan University School of Law, and Hauser Global Fellow at NYU School of Law. She also served as a visiting researcher at Georgetown Law School and at the London School of Economics. Stavroulaki's scholarship has been published or is forthcoming in Northwestern University Law Review, the Journal of Competition Law & Economics, Berkeley Business Law Journal, World Competition, Loyola Consumer Law Review and the American Journal of Law & Medicine. Her book, 鈥淗ealthcare, Quality Concerns and Competition Law: A Systematic Approach (Oxford: Hart Publishing)鈥 explores how health care quality concerns are considered by competition authorities on both sides of the Atlantic.
Her research has been funded by a number of prestigious institutions including the American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law, the Fulbright Commission, NYU School of Law, Michigan Law School, European University Institute, Tel Aviv University, the European Commission, the Greek Scholarships鈥 Foundation and the Greek Association of Law and Economics. Before her academic career, Stavroulaki worked as an antitrust associate in a leading law firm in Greece where she advised multinational firms on a broad range of antitrust and business issues, and as a lawyer at the Policy Unit of DG Competition of the European Commission. She holds a PhD in antitrust law from the European University Institute.

Professor Heather Walter-McCabe joins the SLU LAW faculty from Wayne State University where she held a joint appointment with Wayne State University Law School and Wayne State University School of Social Work.
Walter-McCabe began her career as a social worker at a high acuity pediatric tertiary care hospital in the Midwest working with families whose children had significant medical needs. After law school, she directed a public health research program examining the impact of firearm violence in Indiana. She later served as the executive director of the William H. and Christine H. Hall Center for Law and Health at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law before joining the faculty at the Indiana University School of Social Work.
Her research examines policy mechanisms for advancing health equity at the intersection of law, social work, and public health. Her research focuses on sexual orientation and gender identity as she leads a legal epidemiology project analyzing state policies that contribute to the health outcomes of LGBTQ communities. Additionally, Walter-McCabe was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Public Health Law Teaching Fellow from 2014-16 and has previously served on the executive board of the American Public Health Association.
Her work examining the impact of policy on health disparities in LGBTQ communities has been published in Creighton Law Review, Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy, the Journal of Healthcare Law & Policy, and the Journal of Law, Medicine, and Ethics. She has also published in numerous peer-reviewed journals as part of her commitment to translating complex legal issues and research findings across multiple professions to make the information accessible for use by practitioners and advocates in improving population health. She holds a JD and MSW from Indiana University.
