What is the general academic content of study abroad programs?

The majority of courses that are offered in our study abroad programs have an international or comparative law focus. Bar courses are not offered in this forum. All courses taken abroad will count toward the concentration in international and comparative law. In instances when select courses count towards other School of Law concentrations, the course descriptions will list that additional concentration.

How are courses graded?

Credits earned in our study abroad programs, as well as ABA-approved programs not affiliated with SLU LAW may count towards the student鈥檚 J.D. degree. However,

only grades earned through the SLU LAW Summer Program in Madrid may count toward a student鈥檚 grade point average and impact one鈥檚 class ranking.

How many credits will I earn abroad?
The Summer Law Program in Madrid offers a maximum of six credits. No fewer than 12 credits may be taken in the semester exchange programs and at no time will more than 14 credits be granted. Please contact CICL Executive Director, Prof. Ira H. Trako at ira.trako@slu.edu for the course selections for each exchange program.
What are the cost considerations?

The Summer Law Program will have a published Summer Law Program in Madrid tuition rate. As the semester abroad programs are exchange programs, no money is exchanged between the student and the international law school. Students will pay tuition to SLU LAW and their general SLU LAW scholarships will apply. Students may use financial aid for the summer and semester abroad programs.

Can I use financial aid to fund a study abroad program?
The vast majority of students do use financial aid to study abroad. Any study abroad program that is ABA-approved, including programs not sponsored by SLU LAW will qualify for financial aid through Saint Louis University. Students should contact Jessica Seavers,  Assistant Director of Student Financial Services & Financial Education at jessica.seavers@slu.edu to discuss their unique circumstances and to explore funding options.
How is the housing arranged when studying abroad?
Housing is secured differently for each study abroad program. It can range from having to make one鈥檚 own arrangements independently to securing housing as a function of being accepted to the program. Please explore this question on an individual basis. Costs vary greatly for housing, depending on the study abroad site.
