International Scholarships

As an international student planning to study law at Saint Louis University, financial arrangements must be met before studies begin.

If you need assistance with financing your educational expenses, there are three sources of funding to explore: private scholarships for international students, private student loans, and possibly federal student loans. Review the eligibility criteria for each funding source below to determine if you qualify before completing an application.

SLU LAW LL.M. Diversity Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements: Saint Louis University School of Law (SLU LAW) is pleased to announce LL.M. in American Law for Foreign Lawyers scholarships awarded to incoming law students from historically disadvantaged and marginalized groups (e.g., LGBTQIA+ identity, persons with disabilities, refugee status, asylee status in the U.S., indigenous heritage, national and religious minorities).

SLU LAW will award one (1) full-tuition scholarship and three (3) 30% reduced tuition scholarships to extraordinary LL.M. applicants who meet the SLU LAW admission requirements and successfully explain, in a 500-word essay, how their identity intersects with their life and future goals. Please include the essay as a separate document in your application submission titled, 鈥淟L.M. in American Law for Foreign Lawyers scholarship Essay.鈥 Be sure to include your name and identifying details at the top of the document (i.e., name, address, contact information, date). 

Students who wish to be considered for this scholarship should submit their complete application prior to February 1 to start courses in the Fall semester of that year beginning in August.

Private Scholarships for International Students

Many national and international organizations sponsor scholarships for international students wanting to continue their education in the United States. Scholarships are funds that do not require repayment.

Saint Louis University has compiled a list of scholarships available to international students. SLU does not administer these programs. The awarding organizations determine requirements and deadlines. If interested in applying for a scholarship, contact the organization as early as possible for applications, deadlines and requirements.

American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) Fellowships for Study in USA

Eligibility Requirements: Applicant must be a citizen of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden. The award aims to encourage advanced study and research and increase understanding between the U.S. and Scandinavia. P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund

Eligibility Requirements: The P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to women from outside the United States and Canada who are seeking advanced degrees from an accredited college or university in the U.S. or Canada with the expectation that students will return to their home countries to utilize their education to make a positive impact and foster global peace. To qualify for her first scholarship, an applicant must have a full year of coursework remaining, be enrolled and in residence for the entire school year. A student who is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada is not eligible.

Note: A student with residency for tax purposes only is permitted. Scholarships are not given for online courses, research, internships or for practical training if not combined with coursework. Applications are accepted between September 15 through December 15. The maximum amount awarded to a student is $12,500. Lesser amounts may be awarded according to individual needs. Sons of Norway Foundation 鈥 King Olav V Norwegian-American Heritage Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements: Any American citizen, age 17 or older, who has demonstrated a keen and sincere interest in Norwegian heritage and/or any Norwegian citizen, age 17 or older, who has demonstrated an interest in American heritage. Norwegian graduate or undergraduate students who provide proof of enrollment in an accredited educational institution in the United States. Provide a short autobiography, 150 words or less, and an essay of 500 words or less addressing each of the following key points:

  • Describe how this scholarship will help you further your career goals.
  • Explain why you have chosen your area of study and what you hope to achieve through your career.
  • Share any involvement in volunteer, school and/or community activities and what that involvement has taught you.  
  • State how your program/course of study or future plans align with at least one of the following core values of the foundation:
    • (1) Building the heritage of the future
    • (2) Sustaining the link to contemporary Norway
    • (3) Committing to life-long learning and service
    • (4) Preserving compassion for those in need
    • (5) Funding innovative individuals and opportunities
    • (6) Fostering a cohesive community of generosity.
  • Explain how this scholarship will help you further the study of your heritage at your chosen institution.
  • State how you will share this experience with the Sons of Norway or wider Norwegian-American audiences. 

Multiple scholarships are awarded annually for up to $3,000 each. The deadline to submit the completed application and all required elements is March 1. Please visit the website linked below for more information.

Private Student Loans

A private loan is an educational loan for credit-worthy borrowers (student, parent or other) that is offered by banks and other organizations. You may borrow from any lender you choose and are not required to use a lender on Saint Louis University鈥檚 preferred lender list. Saint Louis University will process loans from any lender without delay. Saint Louis University recommends reviewing your options, including federal loans, before applying for private loans.

Federal Student Loans

International students on an F1 or F2 student visa, J1 or J2 exchange visitor visa or a G series visa do not qualify for federal student loans. However, the U.S. Department of Education offers federal student loans to some eligible non-citizens. Find more information about .
