SLU School of Medicine Hosts Student-Focused Regional Meetings

Saint Louis University School of Medicine welcomed hundreds of participants to campus this fall by hosting several student-focused regional meetings of the American Medical Women’s Association Region 7, the American Physician Scientist Association, and the Student National Medical Association Region II.

SLU School of Medicine hosted the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) Region 7 Conference for the first time in October. AMWA is committed to advancing women in medicine, advocating for equity, and ensuring excellence in health care. The conference featured three speakers, a panel of female leaders, a student poster session, and three workshops focused on advocacy. Fourteen institutions were represented, and many future physicians were inspired to be leaders and advocates in medicine.

SLU SOM's chapter of the American Physician Scientist Association (AMWA) hosted the 2023 Midwest Regional meeting, themed "Cultivating Lifelong Success in Research.” In addition to SLU students, 30% of the attendees were from 11 outside institutions. Kimberly J. Templeton, M.D., professor of orthopedic surgery sports medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Aline Tanios, M.D., and resident physician Harsha Akula from SLU SOM Pediatrics gave keynote addresses, while panel presentations featured diverse perspectives from clinicians and researchers at Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Missouri, Pfizer and SLU School of Medicine. With over 150 attendees and presenters, ranging from undergraduate students to faculty, the event was a phenomenal opportunity for professional development and networking.

The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) Region II Medical Education Conference attracted more than 240 attendees, 35 speakers, and 25 sponsors. Sessions were tailored for high school, pre-medical and medical students and featured oral and poster presentations, and networking with the many exhibitors. SLU SOM Department of Surgery doctors showcased the surgery simulation center to high school students interested in a healthcare career.

SLU School of Medicine students played a pivotal role in the planning and success of all these regional meetings and conferences.
