Submission Guidelines

The Saint Louis University Museum of Contemporary Religious Art (MOCRA) accepts proposals for exhibitions and acquisitions.

Artist/Exhibition Proposals

In general, exhibition schedules are set several years in advance. Due to limited resources and demands on staff time, we cannot guarantee that unsolicited materials will receive a prompt review, nor that a reply will be made to every proposal that is offered. We recommend that you include in your proposal whatever best represents you and your work.

Physical materials should be sent to:

Museum of Contemporary Religious Art
Attn: Submission of artwork
Saint Louis University
221 N. Grand Blvd.
St. Louis, MO 63103

Electronic materials may be emailed to mocra@slu.edu

Note for Submissions

  • Please do not send any one-of-a-kind materials.
  • A CV or resume is helpful, as well as an artist statement.
  • Physical images may be sent as slides, transparencies or prints.
  • We can also review digital images in standard formats.
  • For electronic files, if the total size exceeds 20MB, please use a file-sending or cloud-based service (e.g. Dropbox, Google Drive, or WeTransfer), or mail a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM.
  • Since website links can break, we cannot guarantee review of material referenced on a website.
  • If you wish to have any materials returned, please enclose a suitable mailing container with sufficient postage. Otherwise, all submissions remain the property of MOCRA.
  • MOCRA will not be liable for lost or damaged submissions, either tangible or electronic.
  • MOCRA will make a good faith effort to return materials upon request, but cannot guarantee their return.

Please contact MOCRA with any questions.

Artwork Acquisition Proposals

MOCRA accepts proposals for donations of artwork to the museum collection. Many factors contribute to a decision about accepting such donations, including the relevance of the artwork to MOCRA’s mission, whether the work addresses a gap in the collection, and whether the work presents special conservation or storage challenges.

We discourage you from bringing an artwork to the museum without contacting us in advance, and we accept no liability for any damage that might occur in that situation.

Instead, please contact MOCRA Director David Brinker by phone at 314-977-7170, or via email, to set up an appointment to discuss the donation.

Note for Acquisitions

  • MOCRA cannot offer any advice regarding the tax deductibility of donations of artwork.
  • An appraisal is not required, but please be aware that MOCRA will not conduct an appraisal on your behalf.
  • Please be prepared to provide as much documentation as possible about the provenance (ownership history) of the artwork.
  • Similarly, it is helpful to have as much information as possible regarding the artist.
  • Photographs of the work (when applicable) are helpful. Physical images may be sent as slides, transparencies or prints. We can also review digital images in standard formats.
  • For electronic files, if total size exceeds 20MB, please use a file-sending or cloud-based service (e.g.
  • MOCRA will not be liable for any lost or damaged submissions, either tangible or electronic.
  • MOCRA will make a good faith effort to return materials upon request, but cannot guarantee their return.

Please contact MOCRA with any questions.
