Ignatian Pedagogy Programs

The Reinert Center鈥檚 Ignatian Pedagogy programs include the Ignatian Pedagogy Institute and the Ignatian Pedagogy Academy. All SLU faculty and graduate students are welcome to participate in these programs. While the programs are linked, instructors may attend the annual Ignatian Pedagogy Institute without committing to the Academy.

Ignatian Pedagogy Institute

During this annual, day-long institute, participants expand and deepen their knowledge of Ignatian Pedagogy as an extension of Ignatian spirituality and connected to the particular topic of the year. Through multiple interactive sessions, participants engage in strategies that may be adapted to a variety of disciplines and pedagogical purposes. Over a three-year cycle, we focus on the topics of Contemplation, Imagination, and Discernment practices, as described below.

Institute One: Contemplation

Through multiple interactive sessions, participants will engage in mindful strategies focused on critical thinking and deeper learning that may be adapted to a variety of disciplines and pedagogical purposes.

Institute Two: Imagination

Through multiple interactive sessions, participants will engage in imaginative thinking strategies focused on deep discovery and social justice learning that may be adapted to a variety of disciplines and pedagogical purposes.

Institute Three: Discernment

Through multiple interactive sessions, participants will engage in studied decision making practices focused on higher order thinking and authentic learning that may be adapted to a variety of disciplines and pedagogical purposes.

Ignatian Pedagogy Academy

Participants in the Ignatian Pedagogy Academy compose a community of practice focused on developing their engagement with Jesuit education and Ignatian pedagogy. As part of the Academy participants:

  • Meet together at least once per semester to discuss common readings, participate in a common workshop or facilitated discussion, or the like, and
  • Participate in the Ignatian Pedagogy Institute, offered once per spring on a three-year cycle, as described above. (Institutes do not need to be attended in order.)

At the end of the three-year cycle, Academy members who have engaged regularly in the community of practice meetings and who have completed all three offerings of the Ignatian Pedagogy Institute are designated Fellows of the Ignatian Pedagogy Academy.
