Call Schedule

Saint Louis University 's psychiatry residency training program provides ample supervision and gradually granted more autonomy based on individual evaluation.

Initially, all PGY-1s are directly supervised by a PGY-3 resident until a formal review of their ability to work more independently has been completed by the Clinical Curriculum Committee, typically around six months from the start of residency. At that point, residents are individually progressed to indirect supervision with direct supervision immediately available.

The goal of our program is for all PGY-1s transitioning to PGY-2 year are ready for indirect supervision.

Call Schedule by Year

  • PGY-1: Evening (4:30 to 9 p.m.) and weekend/holiday call (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.), no overnights. On average, three-to-four evenings per month and one-to-two weekend days/month. PGY-3 supervision is directly available.
  • PGY-2: Night call only, approximately one month of night call. From 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday through Thursday night., No clinical expectations Friday through Sunday. On non-night call rotations approximately five total weekend night call shifts distributed throughout the year. Clinical duties end at noon on Friday with call overnight on Friday and Saturday nights.
  • PGY-3: Supervise interns on call, evenings (4:30 to 9 p.m.) and weekends/holidays (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.). This is supervisory only, no direct patient care expectations.
  • PGY-4: No call

All calls are covered by a supervising attending and interns are encouraged to call attendings to discuss patients, and the decision making process. Our residency program is extremely supportive of staffing patients with on-call attendings as it helps us develop interns into knowledgeable and confident residents.
