Parking Regulations
All faculty, staff, students and visitors parking a vehicle at Saint Louis University must comply with SLU and state parking regulations, policies and procedures.
All motor vehicle parking regulations are in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including periods when classes are not in session. Multiple violations or continued abuse of parking regulations, policies and procedures will result in parking privileges being denied and/or relocated at owner's expense to off-campus storage. Mechanical problems, inclement weather or other vehicular disabilities do not justify parking violations.
When parking on campus, follow these regulations:
- A parking permit does not guarantee you a parking space, but only an opportunity to park within a specified area or areas. The Office of Parking, Card and Transportation Services and the Department of Public Safety are authorized to restrict the use of spaces on a temporary basis to accommodate special meetings, University-sponsored activities or construction. Advance notice will be provided in these instances.
- The maximum speed limit in parking garages and lots is 10 m.p.h.
- All vehicles parked on SLU property are at the risk of the vehicle owner. The University is not responsible or liable for loss or damages by reason of fire, theft, collision or other cause to parked vehicles or contents of the same. The vehicle owner and occupants assume full responsibility for any personal injuries that may occur while the vehicle is parked on SLU property.
- Failure to comply with the University and state parking regulations, policies and procedures for parking could result in fines, boots, tows, and/or revoking of parking privileges on University property.
- In an emergency, such as a vehicle breakdown, contact our office at 314-977-2957 and the Department of Public Safety at 314-977-3000. Please provide the vehicle location, description, license plate number and estimated time of removal/repair. If towing or a jump start is needed, the Department of Public Safety can assist or refer you to those who can.
- Hazard lights do not allow you to park in a location for any duration. If you have motor vehicle issues, during our office hours contact our office at 314-977-2957. Outside of those hours contact the Department of Public Safety at 314-977-3000 for assistance and notification of vehicle location/condition.
Parking Defined
Any unattended vehicle is defined as parked and must comply with all University parking regulations. You must park according to campus parking rules and regulations at all times.
Without exception when parking on our lots or in our garages, you must park your vehicle between two white parallel parking stall lines or in front of an unpainted wheel stop. Do not park on or over the line, regardless of how others park.
Campus street parking is only valid if the curb is unpainted or if there is corresponding signage allowing parking (i.e. metered spaces adjacent to unpainted curbs on Laclede Avenue). You must pay for the use of metered spaces regardless of duration during active times. Click here to learn more about our street parking options.
- No Parking Areas: Parking is not permitted in areas not identified as valid parking spaces as outlined above. These areas do not require signage and often are unmarked.
- Yellow or Red Curbs: Yellow or red markings designate fire lanes and no-parking areas. Parking in these areas is prohibited at all times with or without the presence of hazard lights.
- Reserved/Client/Commercial Parking Spaces: Parking is restricted 24 hours a day, seven days a week for reserved spaces, client spaces and commercial parking spaces. Tickets will be issued and an immediate tow or booting will occur if parked in these signed spaces.
Restrictions by Vehicle Type
- Small/Compact Car Space: These spaces exist to allow drivers in a garage better visibility.
Your vehicle must be no larger than 175 inches long by 68 inches wide by 57 inches high and must fit within the white stall lines and boundaries designated by the white dashed line. No trucks, SUVs, wagons, Jeeps or minivans are allowed. Crossovers are a subclass of SUVs and are not allowed in small/compact car spaces. - Motorcycles: Motorcycles have the same permissions and restrictions as all other vehicles. They must be parked in a valid parking space. If that area requires a permit, you must have one. The motorcycle must not obstruct an aisle in any way and can’t obstruct or hinder parking in adjacent parking stalls. Motorcycles cannot park on sidewalks, lawns, pedestrian malls, driveways, bike racks or in hashed areas.
- Abandoned Vehicles: The University reserves the right to tow vehicles that remain on University property in an inoperative, derelict or abandoned condition that are not in compliance with state regulations. University parking facilities may not be used for long-term storage.
Overnight Parking Restrictions
Overnight parking is available in the Olive and Laclede Garage visitor sections. No permits are required in visitor sections for overnight parking. Attendees simply will pay the machine upon exit using the ticket obtained upon entrance. Access to other areas for overnight parking requires license plate registration and purchase of a parking permit.
Game Day Parking
The parking procedure for Men's Basketball home games is as follows:
- SLU Athletes must relocate their vehicles from the St. Peter's parking lot by 8 a.m. Athletes can move vehicles to Laclede Garage, or any other lot/garage as specified by their permit type.
- All permit holders will be required to be off of the East side (Green) St. Peters Parking Lot by 11 a.m.

Parking Violations, Fines and Tow Fees
Fines are payable at the Parking, Card and Transportation Services office or online through within seven calendar days of the citation being issued (the day the ticket is issued is day one).
For plate numbers not registered to a student, faculty or staff member with an active permit, parking fees will double after 30 days if the ticket is not paid or appealed.
The following fees will be assessed to the owner or operator of any vehicle on University property in violation of the parking regulations defined by the University. The registered permit holder is responsible for all parking violations attached to permitted vehicles. By paying a fine, you accept responsibility for the vehicle ticketed, its activity on campus, and assume all violations incurred by said vehicle unless otherwise stated. These lists are not inclusive.
- License plate not facing aisle, not visible or otherwise obstructed from scan by the license plate recognition system.
- A vehicle registered with the University as having disabled parking without a valid disabled placard or state disabled license plate visible.
- Time expired/unpaid in Parkmobile parking area.
- Parking over the stall line.
- Improper use of permit, including but not limited to overnight parking with a student General or Evening permit, parking during the day with an Evening permit, etc.
- Parking in the wrong section of a parking area.
- Parking in the visitor spaces with a valid SLU parking permit.
- Parking in a small-car only space with a vehicle larger than 175 inches long by 68 inches wide by 57 inches high, or if the vehicle is classified as a jeep, wagon, truck, or SUV.
- Exceeding the 30-minute time limit when loading or unloading your vehicle in a marked loading zone. Hazard lights must be on. Note: If your vehicle remains in the loading zone space for one hour, it will be subject to immediate boot and/or tow.
- Parked incorrectly/outside of Parkmobile parking area.
- Parking in a permit holder area when your permit has expired.
- Parking in reserved visitor parking spaces but are a faculty, staff or student.
- Double permit violation is including but not limited to:
- Parking more than one vehicle on SLU’s campuses per parking permit at one time.
- Using your ID’s parking access for more than one vehicle on SLU’s campuses at one time.
- Using your permit and ID access for vehicles other than those you have registered with the University.
- Parking in a permit holder area without having your license plate registered to an active permit.
- Parking in an invalid space (a valid space is one with two white parallel parking stall lines, by a corresponding meter post, or in front of unpainted wheel stop on gravel). Invalid spaces include but are not limited to extending the aisle by one space, parking in a hashed no parking area, etc.
- Parking on an incorrect lot. This is for vehicles registered with a valid parking
permit for a different parking location. All valid parking permits, except for Evening
General, may park in the Laclede Garage at the following times (though many are restricted
to only the following times):
- Monday-Friday, 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.
- Saturday-Sunday, 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.
- Parking in reserved, client and commercial parking spaces. These spaces are marked by signage and are enforced 24 hours, seven days a week. Many require plate registration and/or signage in order to be used.
- Parking on a reserved or premium lot with assigned spaces. This is for vehicles registered with a permit for a different parking location.
- Parking in areas restricted by traffic cones, barricades or other traffic control devices.
- Parking in building or service entrances, crosswalks and construction sites.
- Driving on lawns or sidewalks.
- Possession of a lost or stolen permit. (Parking privileges may be revoked.)
- Possession of a forged or altered permit. (Parking privileges may be revoked.)
- Parking on University property after parking privileges have been revoked.
- Parking in a disabled space without proper University or state permit. This includes the hash-marked area next to the parking space.
- Parking in a fire lane, areas with drive lanes next to a building, or within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. These areas are marked with signage or solid yellow curbs.
- Parking or driving on a pedestrian mall, grass or sidewalk.
- Derelict or abandoned vehicles.
- Blocking or hindering traffic in an aisleway or non-parking area. The vehicle must be blocking, not just extending the aisle. These vehicles must be impeding the flow of traffic or blocking cars so that they cannot exit their spaces.
Appeal Procedure
A parking citation may be appealed by filing an appeal online within 7 calendar days of the citation being issued (the day the ticket was issued is day one). To file an appeal, follow the following steps:
- Click on the under your mySLU Tools tab.
- Select "Citations" at the top of the page.
- Choose "Appeal Citation."
- Enter citation number or select citation if listed and complete appeal process.
Once appealed, the citation will not incur additional fines or holds. It will remain in a pending status until the appeals committee has time to review the citation and your provided information prior to rendering a decision. You will receive an email when a decision has been made. Their decision to either waive the citation or let the fee stand is final and not open for further appeal.
Removal and Impoundment
Staff from the Department of Public Safety and Parking, Card and Transportation Services are authorized to enter, remove or impound motor vehicles from University property at the owner’s expense when the vehicle is in violation of parking regulations and/or commits violations that are a towable offense.
The tow fee is currently $100, but it is subject to change depending on the availability of the vendor providing the towing service. Special equipment or circumstances may increase the charge. A "drop" fee is charged in situations where the tow truck is hooked up to the vehicle but still on SLU property. A daily storage fee of $25 is charged if the vehicle is not reclaimed by the owner.
Cars parked on private property and on the parking lots of surrounding businesses may result in a tow at the owner's expense.
Disabling of Vehicles by Affixation of a Boot Device
Three or more outstanding citations or parking on University property after your privileges have been revoked will result in an immediate boot. A fine of $50 for boot removal, plus all fines and fees owed, must be paid in full at the Office of Parking, Card and Transportation Services.
Tailgating
Saint Louis University promotes community-building activities for its faculty, staff, students, and visitors, and recognizes that tailgating has the potential to enhance the event experience within a safe, responsible, and controlled environment.
Any violation of these terms may result in loss of tailgating privileges, criminal prosecution and/or disciplinary action through the Office of Student Responsibility and Community Standards if the violator is a SLU student.
Tailgating is allowed prior to a scheduled event. Individuals wishing to tailgate prior to a scheduled event are subject to the following guidelines:
- Individuals are responsible for compliance with all federal, state, local and University laws, regulations and policies.
- Tailgating cannot start before two hours prior to the beginning of any event and must be cleaned and vacated within 90 minutes following the conclusion of the event.
- Driving or parking private vehicles on any and all green spaces and sidewalks is prohibited.
- Tents or canopies (which may not exceed 10' x 10') must be secured and may not obstruct fire/safety lanes, sidewalks, drive lanes or pedestrian walkways. These structures must be an extension of your vehicle. Tailgating amenities including furniture, grills, generators or satellite dishes may not obstruct fire/safety lanes, sidewalks, drive lanes or pedestrian walkways.
- Open flames and/or charcoal grills are not permitted in any tailgate or parking area. Propane grills with cylinders 20 lbs. or under are allowed.
- Alcoholic beverages are limited to single-serving, non-glass containers. No common sources (e.g. kegs, beer balls or other large-quantity containers) are allowed.
- The University encourages tailgaters to drink alcohol responsibly by serving food and nonalcoholic beverages, and by having designated drivers to accommodate guests and hosts alike.
- Serving alcohol to or consumption of alcohol by minors (those under 21 years of age) is a violation of state and federal laws and Saint Louis University policy.
- Individuals consuming alcohol may be asked to provide legal identification and proof of age to a campus safety office or local law enforcement officer.
- If a person becomes noticeably intoxicated while tailgating, is displaying obscene or harassing behavior or participates in violence or vandalism, a University official may require him/her to leave the tailgating area and/or campus.
- No alcoholic beverages may be taken into any athletic facility or into an event space.
- Drinking games (including, but not limited to beer pong, flip cup and other table games) and the use of devices intended to accelerate the consumption of alcohol (included, but not limited to funnels or beer bongs) are prohibited.
- The unlawful possession, distribution or use of any drug or controlled substance is prohibited on campus, and such laws shall be enforced in tailgating areas.
- Consistent with the University’s Tobacco-Free Policy, SLU is 100% tobacco-free and tobacco is defined to include, but not be limited to, any lit cigarette, cigar, pipe, bidis, clove cigarette, e-cigarettes, any other smoking product; smokeless or spit tobacco, also known as dip, chew, snuff, or snus in any form; and any other tobacco product or device not approved by the FDA for the strict purpose of tobacco cessation. Tobacco use is not permitted in tailgating locations.
- Pets must be on leashes and under the control of their owner(s) at all times. Pets shall not run at large in tailgating sites or on campus. Furthermore, animals shall not be left unattended on the campus, tied/secured to campus property or left in a motor vehicle. Pet owners shall clean up after their pets, and dispose of any animal waste in tied bags in the trash receptacles located in tailgating locations or carry it out with them.
- The sale of food and/or beverage, or any other product, is prohibited. Commercial activity or solicitations are not allowed on campus.
- All event participants are expected to be respectful to University property and all of the event participants around them.
- Music must be kept at a reasonable volume. Speakers that can stand alone, are excessively loud, or are connected to an amplifier are prohibited. Live bands or DJs are also not permitted.
- Firearms and other weapons are prohibited, in accordance with the University’s Weapons Policy.
- All tailgating participants are expected to remove all trash and recycle appropriate containers when the game is over. The area should be returned to the same condition it was prior to the tailgating event. The disposal of grease or hazardous materials onto the ground or into storm drains is strictly prohibited.
Individuals who violate these terms and/or other applicable regulations and rules may be ticketed or arrested for violation of law, may be removed from the University for that particular sporting event or event, suspended from the University for a sport season or other determined amount of time, lose season tickets, and/or lose tailgating privileges. Students may also be subject to discipline under the student code of conduct. Employees may also be subject to discipline under employee disciplinary processes.
Any person damaging University property shall be responsible for the cost of repairs.
When planning for your tailgate, please note the following items are not permitted:
- Amplified sound – Speakers that stand alone, are excessively loud or are connected to an amplifier.
- Box trucks, motorcycles, over-sized vans
- Charcoal grills
- Deep fryers
- Drones
- Kegs
- Open flames (i.e. fire pits)
- Propane cylinders larger than 20 lbs.
- Stakes
Tailgating may be permitted on the uncovered fourth floor of the Olive/Compton garage, or in such areas as the University may determine, in its sole discretion, to be appropriate for tailgating at a specific event, date and time.
Enforcement of these terms within the jurisdiction of the University Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, the athletic director, the alcohol use administrator, the Office of Human Resources Management, and the Office of Student Responsibility and Community Standards. The University reserves the right to restrict any activity that is viewed, in its discretion, as excessive, disruptive, or unsafe, and to inspect any item, activity, or vehicle.
The University is not responsible or liable for damage, loss or theft of materials, items or personal property brought into the tailgating locations.
